Reef Dives on Aliwal Shoal

Cathedral

Depth: 18–27m | Advanced Divers

A magnificent dome-like structure resembling a cathedral, this site is especially popular during the Ragged Tooth Shark season, where divers can observe up to 40 of these gentle sharks resting within the amphitheater. Beyond sharks, the area is home to stingrays and diverse fish species.

Raggies Cave

Depth: 16–18m | Open Water Divers

As its name suggests, this cave is a hotspot for Ragged Tooth Sharks during their season. Divers can safely observe these creatures from the cave’s entrance. The surrounding area also features resident potato bass and various moray eels.

Eelskins

Depth: 12–19m | Open Water Divers

Situated at the southwestern tip of the reef, Eelskins showcases fossilized rock formations, sand gullies, and inviting swim-throughs. Divers can encounter cowries, Ragged Tooth Sharks during their season, and vibrant shoals of tropical fish.

North Eastern Pinnacles

Depth: 6–17m | Open Water Divers

Ideal for beginners, this site features overhangs and potholes that serve as nurseries for small fish. Anemones with clownfish, octopuses, and large potato bass are commonly spotted here.

Inside Edge

Depth: 14–22m | Open Water Divers

Encompassing the inshore edge of the shoal, this area is rich with marine life, including octopuses, cuttlefish, scorpionfish, and various eels. The ledge’s topography provides shelter, making it a haven for smaller marine creatures.

Outside Edge

Depth: 18–27m | Open Water to Advanced Divers

This site is renowned for sightings of larger marine species. Divers should keep an eye on the midwater for schools of hammerheads, game fish, and occasional Zambezi and Tiger sharks.
